U10B All Stars - Sensational at Sectionals
Our intrepid All Stars played sensationally at Sectionals, nearly upsetting the Area Champions’ apple cart with an appearance in the medal round. Instead, the boys took home 16 points, a Las Vegas Area 1S scalp, a scrappy tie against a tough Beach Cities champion team from Manhattan Beach, and one conceded goal against group winner Arcadia that made up the difference between advancing to the semifinals.Ultimately, the extremely athletic Area 1P champion South LA team prevailed over Arcadia (7-3 in the final) to advance to the State Championship inDavis, while Manhattan Beach took 3rd place in the Section.
Once again, the Santa Monica BU10 All Stars showed their promise, looking most dangerous when connecting diagonal passes and moving off the ball. A 2-2 tie with Manhattan Beach may have been Santa Monica’s strongest on-field performance to date. Those boys looked huge and were strong on the ball. But against the early run of play, our All Stars struck swiftly with a counterattack that began with the keeper, driving a ball up field to our striker who ran onto the ball behind the defense to calmly slot home to open the account. By the end of the game, a feverish Manhattan Beach was unrelenting in its attack, seeking to find a third goal that would preserve its perfect record—but our boys were just as determined to be the ones to break their win streak, and the defense held to deliver that team its first tie.
With that result, Santa Monica knew it had a chance in its 2nd match against San Gabriel All Star Champions Arcadia, but alas the boys succumbed in the heat and lost 4-2 at midday, in a game that we would love to have back against the Sectionals runner-ups. Finally, needing a result against Bullhead City to have a chance too advance, the SMBU10s delivered a 3-1 victory good for nine points in the game and 16 in the tourney. Alas, Arcadia beat Manhattan Beach 3-2, leaving the vanquished with 16 points as well, and a one goal edge on tiebreaker to advance to the medal round and a date with South LA before taking 3rd vs. Chino.
All in all, an exciting Saturday of soccer for Santa Monica, where some of us also watched the defending U-12G Extra State Champions take care of business and advance to Davis March 16-17. We wish them well, and will do our best to make our own luck that same St. Patrick’s Day weekend at the Pot O’ Gold in Thousand Oaks, where we look to take home our own first title.
