Santa Monica AYSO Region 20 is a 100% volunteer-powered organization — and that’s what keeps registration costs low and soccer accessible for all.
⚽ Every family is expected to contribute an average of one hour per week per child. For some that means coaching or refereeing weekly, for others it might be helping out with special events or behind-the-scenes support.
No soccer experience? No problem. AYSO provides all the training and certification you need. Read on to find the role that’s right for you!
🟢 Team & Game Volunteers
Each team depends on key on-the-field roles to function smoothly each week, including:
- Coach & Assistant Coach
- Team Manager
- Referees (each team needs at least 3 certified refs, ideally 5)
- Practice Chaperone
💡 In 10U/12U/14U, team referees must earn 15 Referee Volunteer Points for the team to qualify for playoffs.
🟠 Off-the-Field Admin Volunteers
Prefer something flexible or remote? Many roles can be done from home or behind the scenes — and they’re just as important:
- Division Assistant
- Communications or Social Media
- Website Support
- Event Check-in
- And more!
🧠 Most roles require Safe Haven online certification.

❌ Opt-Out Option
We know life gets busy. If you’re truly unable to volunteer (e.g., living abroad), you may opt out by making a $450 donation per child. This covers your team’s equivalent of 3 referee points, but remember — your time is worth far more than your dollars.
